Iberia is a masterpiece of the piano repertoire, composed by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz between 1905 and 1908. It is widely considered one of the most important and technically demanding works in impressionistic and Spanish nationalist piano music.

Structure of the Work

The suite consists of four books, each containing three pieces, making twelve pieces in total. They capture the sights, sounds, and rhythms of Spain, particularly the region of Andalusia.

Book Piece Number Title Description / Key Elements
Book 1 1 Evocación A subtle, impressionistic opening blending a fandango rhythm with a lyrical melody.
2 El Puerto Inspired by El Puerto de Santa María, featuring a lively zapateado dance rhythm.
3 Fête-dieu à Seville (Corpus Christi in Seville) Captures a religious procession with clashing bells and a solemn saeta chant.
Book 2 4 Rondeña Named after the town of Ronda, it features alternating meters typical of flamenco.
5 Almería A dreamier, more relaxed piece based on the taranta rhythm of the Mediterranean port.
6 Triana Named after the famous gypsy quarter of Seville, known for its brilliant, rhythmic castanet effects.
Book 3 7 El Albaicín Named after the gypsy quarter of Granada; heavily praises by Claude Debussy for its haunting atmosphere.
8 El Polo Depicts a sorrowful, dramatic Andalusian dance with sharp, rhythmic accents.
9 Lavapiés Named after a bustling district in Madrid, full of syncopated rhythms and complex textures.
Book 4 10 Málaga A virtuosic piece full of passion and traditional Spanish melodic ornamentation.
11 Jerez A deeply complex, atmospheric piece utilizing the soleares flamenco form.
12 Eritaña Inspired by an inn on the outskirts of Seville, described by Debussy as the joy of morning and the laughter of crowds.

Style and Legacy

  • Virtuosity: Iberia is notorious for its extreme technical difficulty. Albéniz frequently writes for overlapping hands, dense textures, and intricate cross-rhythms that require incredible stamina and precision.

  • Impressionist Influence: While deeply rooted in Spanish folk music, the suite shares a close harmonic relationship with the French Impressionism of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

  • Orchestral Arrangements: Although originally written for solo piano, parts of Iberia were later brilliantly orchestrated by Albéniz's friend Enrique Fernández Arbós, and later by Carlos Surinach.

"There is nothing more evocative than El Albaicín... It has the scent of a flower, the sound of a guitar, and the memory of a night in Spain." — Claude Debussy
